The year-old, who stars as free-spirited divorcee Roberta Hertzel, jumps naked into a hot tub with co-star and infamous ladies' man Jack Nicholson in a clumsy attempt to seduce him. Bates - who would be the first to admit that she does not possess the usual stick-thin Hollywood body - agreed to strip because the scene fitted in with Hertzel's ageing hippy character. Bates, who won an Oscar for her role as an obsessed fan in the thriller Misery, said there was a lot of discussion before she shed her clothes for About Schmidt. Bates, who went nude for a play about a decade ago but has never stripped for the big screen, said she was not shocked when she saw the finished cut of the controversial scene.
